textbook
Microeconomics : Principles and Policy by Baumol and Blinder (Thomson South-Western).
The latest edition (10th) and the previous edition (9th) of this textbook are virtually identical, so take your pick!
You have three purchasing options -- just make sure that you have your book no later than February 7.
(1) Buy your textbook at the campus bookstore. Prepare to spend more than $100...
(2) Get a much better deal online, especially if you buy a used copy -- try these searches (on Fetchbook, a site that compares prices from dozens of online booksellers, such as Amazon and half.com) :
• Current (10th) edition :
- most recent printing (2007) [ISBN #978-0-324-53701-7]
- earlier printing (2005) [ISBN #978-0-324-22115-2]
- most recent printing (2007) [ISBN #978-0-324-53701-7]
- earlier printing (2005) [ISBN #978-0-324-22115-2]
• Previous (9th) edition :
- book with CD (which is not needed for class) [ISBN #978-0-030-35517-2]
- book only [ISBN #978-0-324-20164-2]
- book with CD (which is not needed for class) [ISBN #978-0-030-35517-2]
- book only [ISBN #978-0-324-20164-2]
While you wait for your book to arrive, you can download each of the first six chapters online for free (!) on the publisher's website or all six chapters here (as a single 3.8 MB pdf file).
(3) An interesting third alternative, which saves both money and trees, is to buy a digital "eBook."
For about half the price of a printed book ($67), you can download the full textbook as an Acrobat (pdf) file -- or you can buy individual chapters a la carte for $5 each, which might be more cost-effective since the first six chapters are available free (see above). Available at ichapters.com.
Study Guide (10th edition) by Baumol and Blinder [ISBN #978-0-324-23191-5].
This accompanying workbook is strictly optional -– it includes plenty of practice problems (most of which are fairly simplistic), so you might (or might not) find it a useful resource for practicing and reviewing the basic concepts. You can preview a sample chapter on the publisher's website. Available at the campus bookstore and online.
We will follow the textbook closely and sequentially ; however, some textbook topics may be omitted and other material may be added, as announced.
grading
| tests : highest test grade | 25% |
| 2nd highest test grade | 25% |
| lowest test grade | 0% |
| final exam | 25% |
| quiz / HW / disc. section | 25% |
| final course grade | 100% |
Since the lowest of your three test grades will be dropped, missing one test (for any reason) will not adversely affect your grade, so no make-up tests will be given, regardless of the legitimacy or unavoidability of your circumstances.
The cumulative final exam will be on Thursday, May 15 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in Room 107 of the East Gym.
You are responsible for following the department’s official policy about make-up final exams.
Practice problems will be assigned frequently. Homework will usually be collected and graded (either for correctness or simply for completion) in your weekly discussion section. Late homework assignments will not be accepted.
Attendance is not taken in lecture. However, unannounced quizzes will frequently be given in class (and, as with the tests, no make-ups are given). Also, students will often be randomly selected from the class list to answer questions -- and if your name is called but you're absent, your grade will be (slightly) adversely affected -- and keep in mind that you are responsible not only for all material covered during the lectures, but also for any announcements that are made. Attendance in discussion section may be required (and factored into your homework grade) by your teaching assistant.
There will be no extra-credit opportunities, though grades (for all members of the class) may be curved. Furthermore, if you demonstrate consistent effort, you will not receive a failing grade, regardless of your final course score.
