After this session, students will be able to:
- Discuss and describe the roles of the USPSTF and ACIP in setting national guidelines for clinical prevention.
- Use ePSS and ShotsOnLine to find up-to-date prevention recommendations for clinical use.
- For any given patient (age, gender, health status), select the appropriate clinical prevention recommendations (screening, chemoprophylaxis, vaccination and behavior change counseling).
- Distinguish between US Preventive Services Task Force Graded Recommendations (A, B, C, D recommendations and I statements) and discuss what these grades mean.
- Review the clinical detail associated with the prevention recommendations (in the rationale and clinical considerations for the USPSTF recommendations and in the footnotes of the ACIP recommendations)
- Discuss the implementation of different preventive services in practice, concentrating on how to assess risk, how to increase delivery rates.
- Discuss the ``Five'' model for counseling about any prevention activity: Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, Arrange
- Discuss how to manage patients who are hesitant to undergo a preventive service.
