Objectives

After this session, students will be able to:

  1. Discuss and describe the roles of the USPSTF and ACIP in setting national guidelines for clinical prevention.
  2. Use ePSS and ShotsOnLine to find up-to-date prevention recommendations for clinical use.
  3. For any given patient (age, gender, health status), select the appropriate clinical prevention recommendations (screening, chemoprophylaxis, vaccination and behavior change counseling).
  4. Distinguish between US Preventive Services Task Force Graded Recommendations (A, B, C, D recommendations and I statements) and discuss what these grades mean.
  5. Review the clinical detail associated with the prevention recommendations (in the rationale and clinical considerations for the USPSTF recommendations and in the footnotes of the ACIP recommendations)
  6. Discuss the implementation of different preventive services in practice, concentrating on how to assess risk, how to increase delivery rates.
  7. Discuss the ``Five'' model for counseling about any prevention activity: Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, Arrange
  8. Discuss how to manage patients who are hesitant to undergo a preventive service.
