  Greek Bronze Age (prehistoric)

  Arrival of Indo-Europeans in Greece.
1600-1150
  Greek palace cultures flourish on the Greek mainland and elsewhere (Crete, Cyprus, Turkish coastline). Much of Greek mythology has its roots in dimly remembered events from this period.
ca. 1100-750
  Iron Age (still prehistoric)
    Period of decline, then recovery, following the collapse of the palace cultures. Most of the old kingdoms break up. Exceptions: Athens, the Greek kingdoms on the island of Cyprus.
ca. 800-490
 
Archaic period.
    Introduction of alphabetic writing to Greece. The birth of the polis. The rise of hoplite warfare. Overseas colonization. A period of oligarchy and tyranny in Greece; movement toward democracy here and there in the Greek world.

  Draco's law code at Athens.

  Solon's constitutional reforms and law code at Athens:
  1. Birth class system replaced with property classes.
  2. Cancellation of debt.
  3. End to debt-slavery.
  4. Establishment of council of 400.
  5. Establishment of citizen-jury courts to which to appeal an official's verdict - in effect, a democratic court system.
  6. Laws to replace Draco's - all except Draco's homicide law.

Sparta dominant power in Peloponnese.

  Cleisthenes institutes reforms at Athens (some regard Cleisthenes as founder of democracy.):
  1. Extended citizenship.
  2. Redistricted Attica (to reduce aristocratic control).
  3. Council of 500 (chosen from the new 10 tribes) to replace council of 400.
  4. New office: the 10 generals (strategoi).
  5. Established ostracism (political "time-out" for potential tyrants).
