PlautusÕ Mercator scene 4.4 ÒThe Cook Stirs up a MessÕ

Student production (U. Marburg, Germany) spring 2010

Synopsis: In this advanced Latin reading course, we will explore selections from several Roman comedies of Plautus (esp. Poenulus, Mercator) that highlight disfranchised contributors (slaves, foreigners, women) to the satirical Greco-Roman world of comedy. Students will gain experience with archaic Latin, performance of oral Latin, and scholarly writing in a classical genre, in addition to greater proficiency in general Latin reading skills. Writing assignments in this course earn a Harpur W toward your Harpur Writing Requirement.

Objectives:

Students in H courses will demonstrate an understanding of human experience though the study of literature or philosophy.

Students in W courses will demonstrate

1.     The ability to write effectively and coherently, in ways appropriate to the discipline and the level of the course.

2.    The ability to revise and improve their writing in both form and content. (W courses require 10 minimum pages of revised and improved writing)
