Zoom Meetings

For the fall 2020 semester, all class meetings will be held via Zoom. This page concerns what you need to know and do in advance of meetings.

Equipment, connections, physical space

You can Zoom into class using (in order of preference):

  1. A computer with wifi or networked connection. Invest in a good headset.
  2. A smartphone with wifi or 4g/5g connection. Invest in a good headset.
  3. A conventional phone connection.

Find a quiet spot away from crowds, roads, etc., and with a good network, wifi, or wireless connection. A good headset helps block background noise. It helps us hear you, and you, us. I strongly urge you to get a headset.

The campus itself is not closing; you can still come to campus to use its wifi. (The Libary may be closed.) We've been told that the ITS Helpdesk may be able to lend you a laptop.

But you can even do class using a phone with a conventional land line. Having a screen is a definite plus. Lack of a screen should not stop you from attending class.

Sessions will be recorded, and recordings made available via myCourses, course site Zoom link.

Set up a University-hosted Zoom account

Go to:

http://binghamton.zoom.us

Click "Sign In"

Next screen, look for a popup asking if you want to sign up for, or switch to, the Binghamton University Zoom account.

You do. Click yes. Fill in the requested info.

You cannot join these meetings using a free or other non-University account.

Download and install the necessary client or app:

  • Still signed into BU Zoom via web, look for "RESOURCES," upper right
  • On dropdown, click "Dowload Zoom Client" to go to the Download Center

Join meetings, view upcoming meetings, view recorded meetings

To access meetings you will need to visit myCourses to pick up the correct Zoom meeting link and passcode. Do not share that link or passcode.

To view that link, the schedule of upcoming meetings, and links to recorded sessions, go to myCourses > course page for this course. Click the "Zoom meetings" link for Zoom meetings links and for recorded past sessions ("Cloud Recordings").
